Webcam Not Working? Here's How to Fix It Fast

A webcam that refuses to work right when you need to join a meeting or video call is one of the most frustrating computer problems. When webcam not working becomes an issue, the cause is usually something you can fix yourself. Whether your camera shows a black screen, is not detected by your system, or works in some apps but not others, the fix is usually a setting, permission, or driver issue rather than broken hardware. This guide covers every common cause and solution for both built-in laptop cameras and external USB webcams.

Check the Basics First

  1. Look for a physical shutter or cover. Many modern laptops have a built-in privacy shutter that slides over the camera lens. Some external webcams also have a lens cap or a physical switch. Make sure the camera is uncovered.
  2. Check for a camera indicator light. If the LED next to the camera is off, the camera is not active. If it is on but you see a black screen, another application may already be using the camera.
  3. Restart your computer. A restart releases the camera from any application that locked it and reloads the camera driver. This alone fixes the problem in many cases.
  4. For external webcams: unplug the USB cable, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Try a different USB port. Avoid USB hubs if possible, as they can cause power or bandwidth issues.

Fix Camera Permissions in Windows

Windows requires explicit permission before any application can access the camera. If permissions are disabled, no app will see the webcam even though the hardware is working.

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
  2. Make sure Camera access is turned on at the top.
  3. Scroll down to Let apps access your camera and toggle it on.
  4. Find the specific app you want to use (Zoom, Teams, Chrome, etc.) and make sure it has camera access enabled.
  5. At the bottom, enable Let desktop apps access your camera. Many video call applications run as desktop apps and need this separate toggle.

Close Competing Applications

Only one application can use the webcam at a time on most systems. If another app is using the camera, any new app that tries to access it will see a black screen or get an error.

  • Close all video call apps (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, Skype, Discord) and any camera or streaming software (OBS, ManyCam, Snap Camera).
  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and check for any of these applications still running in the background. End their processes.
  • Check the system tray (bottom-right corner) for camera-related apps running in the background.

Update or Reinstall Camera Drivers

Update the Driver

  1. Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button).
  2. Expand Cameras or Imaging devices.
  3. Right-click your webcam and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  4. If Windows says the best drivers are already installed, visit the webcam manufacturer's website (Logitech, Microsoft, etc.) and download the latest driver manually.

Reinstall the Driver

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the webcam and select Uninstall device.
  2. Check "Delete the driver software for this device" if the option is available.
  3. Restart your computer. Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
  4. For external USB webcams, unplug the webcam before restarting, then plug it back in after Windows has fully booted.

According to Microsoft's camera troubleshooting documentation, reinstalling the camera driver resolves the majority of detection issues that persist after a restart.

Mac Camera Fixes

  1. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and verify that the app you want to use has camera permission toggled on.
  2. If the camera shows a black screen in all apps, reset the camera process. Open Terminal and run: sudo killall VDCAssistant followed by sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant. This forces macOS to release and re-initialize the camera.
  3. If the camera is not detected at all, reset the SMC (System Management Controller). For Intel Macs: shut down, hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds. For Apple Silicon Macs, a regular restart accomplishes the same thing.

If your microphone also fails during video calls, it may be a related permission or driver issue. See our guide on microphone not detected for audio input troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Webcam Not Working

Why does my webcam show a black screen?

A black screen usually means another application is using the camera, the privacy shutter is closed, or the camera permissions are disabled. Close all apps that might be using the camera, check for a physical shutter, and verify camera permissions in your system settings.

Can I use my phone as a webcam?

Yes. Windows 11 has a built-in feature under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices that lets you use an Android phone as a wireless webcam. On Mac, the Continuity Camera feature works with iPhones running iOS 16 or later. Third-party apps like DroidCam and Camo also work across platforms.

Why does my external webcam keep disconnecting?

Frequent disconnections point to a USB power issue, a faulty cable, or USB power management settings. Try a different USB port (preferably USB 3.0), use the original cable, and disable USB selective suspend in Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings.

My webcam works in one app but not another. Why?

Each application has its own camera settings independent of the system. Open the settings of the app where the webcam does not work and select the correct camera from the video input dropdown. Also check that the app has camera permission in Windows Privacy settings.
