YouTube Not Loading? Here's How to Fix It

YouTube not loading is one of the most disruptive internet problems because the platform is used for everything from entertainment to education to work. The page may refuse to load entirely, videos may show a black screen, or the playback spinner may buffer endlessly. The cause is usually your internet connection, browser issues, or a setting that blocks YouTube content. This guide covers every fix for desktop and mobile devices.

Check Your Internet Connection

YouTube requires a stable internet connection. Even if other websites load, YouTube's video streaming demands more bandwidth than a typical web page.

  1. Test your speed. Go to fast.com or speedtest.net in a new tab. YouTube recommends at least 3 Mbps for SD video and 25 Mbps for 4K. If your speed is below 1 Mbps, YouTube will struggle to load.
  2. Restart your router. Unplug your router from power, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully boot. This clears the router's memory and often resolves bandwidth issues.
  3. Switch to a wired connection. If you are on WiFi, try connecting your computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. WiFi interference can cause intermittent connectivity that disrupts video streaming without affecting simpler page loads.
  4. Try a different network. Connect to a mobile hotspot or a different WiFi network. If YouTube loads on the other network, the issue is with your primary internet connection or router.

Browser Fixes

Clear Browser Cache and Cookies

  1. Open Chrome and press Ctrl+Shift+Delete.
  2. Set time range to All time.
  3. Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  4. Click Delete data and reload YouTube.

Disable Browser Extensions

Ad blockers, VPN extensions, and privacy tools commonly interfere with YouTube. Some ad blockers trigger YouTube's anti-adblock measures, which can prevent videos from loading entirely.

  1. Go to chrome://extensions.
  2. Disable all extensions, especially ad blockers and VPN extensions.
  3. Reload YouTube. If it works, enable extensions one at a time to find the one causing the conflict.

Try Incognito Mode

Press Ctrl+Shift+N to open an incognito window and go to YouTube. Incognito mode disables all extensions and uses a clean session. If YouTube works in incognito, the problem is with an extension, a cookie, or cached data in your regular browsing session.

Try a Different Browser

Open YouTube in a different browser (Firefox, Edge, Safari). If it works in another browser, the issue is specific to your primary browser. If YouTube fails in all browsers, the problem is network-related.

DNS and Network Settings

Change Your DNS Server

Your ISP's DNS server may be slow or failing to resolve YouTube's addresses correctly. Switching to a public DNS server often fixes loading issues.

If you are also experiencing app issues, see our guide on chrome keeps crashing.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi (or Ethernet) > click your network > Hardware properties.
  2. Click Edit next to DNS server assignment.
  3. Select Manual and enter:
    • Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare DNS)
    • Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4 or 1.0.0.1
  4. Save and reload YouTube.

Flush DNS Cache

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run: ipconfig /flushdns. This clears any stale DNS entries that might be pointing to an incorrect or unreachable YouTube server. According to YouTube's troubleshooting documentation, DNS issues are a frequently overlooked cause of loading failures.

If your internet connection itself is unstable, our guide on WiFi keeps disconnecting covers network stability fixes that will resolve YouTube loading issues caused by connection drops.

Mobile Device Fixes

YouTube App Not Loading

  • Force close the app. On Android: Settings > Apps > YouTube > Force stop. On iOS: swipe up from the bottom and swipe the YouTube card away.
  • Clear the app cache. On Android: Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage > Clear cache. On iOS, you need to uninstall and reinstall the app to clear its cache.
  • Update the app. Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and check for a YouTube update.
  • Check your phone's date and time. An incorrect date or time can cause SSL certificate errors that prevent YouTube from loading. Go to Settings > Date & time and enable automatic date and time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Youtube Not Loading

Why does YouTube load but videos show a black screen?

A black screen with audio usually means hardware acceleration is conflicting with the video renderer. Go to Chrome settings > System and toggle off "Use hardware acceleration when available." Restart Chrome and try the video again.

Why is YouTube buffering even though my internet is fast?

ISPs sometimes throttle YouTube traffic during peak hours. Try using a VPN to see if speeds improve. Also, lower the video quality by clicking the gear icon on the player and selecting 720p or lower to reduce bandwidth requirements.

Can my school or workplace block YouTube?

Yes. Schools, offices, and public networks commonly block YouTube through their firewall or content filter. Try accessing YouTube on your mobile data instead of the network's WiFi. If it works on mobile data, the network is blocking it.

Why does YouTube not load only in one country?

Some countries restrict YouTube access. In regions where YouTube is blocked by government policy, a VPN is typically the only way to access the service. YouTube is fully available in most countries, but specific videos may be region-restricted by the uploader.
