Gmail Not Receiving Emails? Here's How to Fix It

When Gmail stops receiving emails, the problem can range from a full storage quota to an overzealous filter sending everything to spam. When gmail not receiving emails becomes an issue, the cause is usually something you can fix yourself. The challenge is that you often do not realize emails are missing until someone tells you they sent one. This guide helps you find where your missing emails went and how to make sure new emails arrive in your inbox going forward.

Check Spam and Trash Folders

Gmail's spam filter occasionally catches legitimate emails. This is the first place to look.

  1. Open Gmail and click Spam in the left sidebar. If you do not see it, click More to expand the full label list.
  2. Search through the spam folder for the missing email. If you find it, open it and click Report as not spam. This moves it to your inbox and tells Gmail not to filter future emails from that sender.
  3. Also check the Trash folder. An email rule or a forwarding configuration may be automatically deleting incoming messages.

Check All Mail and Other Tabs

Gmail's tabbed inbox (Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, Forums) sorts incoming emails into categories. An email you expect in Primary may have been sorted into Promotions or Updates.

  1. Click on each tab across the top of your inbox to look for the missing email.
  2. Click on All Mail in the left sidebar to see every email regardless of labels and tabs.
  3. Use the search bar with the sender's email address: from:sender@example.com to find all emails from that person regardless of where Gmail sorted them.

Check Your Storage Quota

Gmail shares its storage quota with Google Drive and Google Photos. If your 15 GB of free storage is full, Gmail cannot receive new emails. Senders will get a bounce-back message.

  1. Go to Google One Storage to check your current usage.
  2. If you are at or near 100%, free up space by:
    • Deleting large emails: search size:10m in Gmail to find emails larger than 10 MB.
    • Emptying the Trash and Spam folders (they still count toward storage).
    • Deleting files from Google Drive.
    • Removing photos from Google Photos or adjusting the quality setting to save space.
  3. After freeing up space, new emails should start arriving within a few hours.

Check Filters and Forwarding

Email Filters

A misconfigured filter can automatically archive, delete, or label incoming emails so they never appear in your inbox.

  1. Go to Gmail Settings (gear icon) > See all settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses.
  2. Review each filter. Look for filters that apply "Skip Inbox (Archive it)" or "Delete it" actions.
  3. Delete or edit any filter that matches emails you want to receive.

Email Forwarding

If email forwarding is enabled, Gmail may be forwarding your emails to another address and optionally archiving or deleting the originals.

  1. Go to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  2. Check if forwarding is enabled. If it is and you did not set it up, someone may have gained access to your account. Disable forwarding and change your password immediately.
  3. If you intended to forward, make sure the dropdown says "keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox" rather than "archive" or "delete."

According to Google's email delivery troubleshooting guide, misconfigured filters and forwarding rules are among the most common causes of missing emails in Gmail.

Google Workspace and Server Issues

If you use Gmail through Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) for business, your organization's administrator may have configured routing rules, compliance filters, or content policies that affect email delivery. Contact your IT administrator to check if organizational policies are blocking incoming emails.

For widespread issues, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard to see if Gmail is experiencing service disruptions. During outages, emails may be delayed but typically arrive once the service is restored.

If your email issues extend beyond Gmail to your internet connection, see our guide on WiFi connected but no internet for network troubleshooting that may resolve email delivery delays.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gmail Not Receiving Emails

How long does it take for a Gmail email to arrive?

Most emails arrive within seconds to a few minutes. Delays of more than an hour can indicate a problem with the sender's mail server, Gmail's spam processing, or a server-side queuing issue. Check your spam folder and All Mail after 30 minutes.

Can someone send me an email and I never receive it?

Yes. If your storage is full, the email bounces back to the sender. If your spam filter catches it and you do not check spam within 30 days, it is automatically deleted. Emails can also be silently blocked by organizational policies in Google Workspace environments.

Why am I receiving some emails but not others from the same sender?

Gmail categorizes each email independently. One email from a sender may go to Primary while another goes to Promotions if its content looks more like marketing. Check all tabs and use the search bar with the sender's email address to find all their messages.

Does Gmail have a daily receiving limit?

Gmail does not impose a strict daily receiving limit on incoming emails for regular users. However, Google Workspace accounts may have limits set by their organization's administrator. If you receive an unusually high volume of emails (thousands per day), some may be delayed or temporarily queued by Gmail's servers.
