AirPlay Not Working on Roku? Try These Fixes

Apple AirPlay lets you stream video, music, and photos from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac directly to your Roku TV or streaming device. When roku airplay not working becomes an issue, the cause is usually something you can fix yourself. When Roku AirPlay is not working, you cannot mirror your screen or cast content, which defeats one of the biggest advantages of having an AirPlay-compatible Roku. Most AirPlay issues on Roku come down to network settings, software versions, or device compatibility, and you can fix them without calling support.

Requirements for AirPlay on Roku

Before troubleshooting, confirm your setup meets the minimum requirements. AirPlay is not available on every Roku device.

If you're also having network problems, check our smart tv wifi not working troubleshooting guide.

  • Roku OS 9.4 or later is required. Older software versions do not support AirPlay.
  • Apple device running iOS 12.3 or later (iPhone, iPad) or macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later (Mac).
  • Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. AirPlay uses your local network to communicate between your Apple device and the Roku.
  • A compatible Roku model. Not all Roku hardware supports AirPlay. Check Roku's official AirPlay compatibility list to confirm your model is supported.

Step-by-Step Fixes for AirPlay on Roku

Step 1: Verify Both Devices Are on the Same Network

Open your iPhone or iPad Settings and tap Wi-Fi to see which network you are connected to. Then on your Roku, go to Settings > Network > About and compare the network name. They must match exactly. If one device is on a 5 GHz band and the other on 2.4 GHz, they may appear to be on different networks even though the router is the same.

Step 2: Enable AirPlay on Your Roku

Navigate to Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit on your Roku. Make sure AirPlay is turned on. If you do not see this option, your Roku model or software version does not support AirPlay. Update your Roku software or check compatibility.

Step 3: Restart All Devices

Restart your Apple device by powering it off and back on. Restart your Roku from Settings > System > System restart. Finally, restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds. This clears temporary network glitches that block AirPlay discovery.

Step 4: Update Roku Software

Go to Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Install any available updates and restart the device. Roku frequently patches AirPlay bugs in firmware updates, so running the latest version is critical.

Step 5: Update Your Apple Device

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update. On a Mac, go to System Settings > General > Software Update. Outdated iOS or macOS versions can have AirPlay compatibility issues with newer Roku firmware.

Step 6: Check Your Router Settings

Some router configurations block AirPlay traffic. Log into your router admin panel and check these settings:

  • AP Isolation / Client Isolation must be disabled. This feature prevents devices on the same network from communicating with each other, which breaks AirPlay.
  • Multicast / mDNS must be enabled. AirPlay uses multicast DNS (Bonjour) to discover devices on the network.
  • UPnP should be enabled to allow automatic port configuration.

Step 7: Reset AirPlay Settings on Roku

If nothing else works, go to Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit and select Reset paired devices. This clears all stored AirPlay pairing data and forces a fresh connection. You will need to re-pair your Apple devices after this step.

What to Do If AirPlay Still Does Not Work

If you have tried every step above and AirPlay still fails, consider these additional options:

  • Try a different Apple device. If AirPlay works from your Mac but not your iPhone, the issue is device-specific. Update or restart that specific device.
  • Factory reset your Roku. Go to Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset. This erases all data and gives you a clean starting point for AirPlay setup.
  • Use an Ethernet connection. If your Roku supports wired Ethernet, try connecting it directly to the router. This eliminates Wi-Fi as a variable and can resolve persistent AirPlay issues caused by wireless interference.

If you are experiencing broader Wi-Fi connectivity problems with your Roku, our guide on Roku Wi-Fi not working covers additional network troubleshooting steps that may help.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roku Airplay Not Working

Can I use AirPlay on any Roku device?

No. AirPlay is only available on select Roku TV models and streaming players released in 2017 or later running Roku OS 9.4 or higher. Older Roku Express and Premiere models do not support AirPlay. Check your model against Roku's compatibility list before troubleshooting.

Does AirPlay work over Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi?

No. AirPlay requires a Wi-Fi network connection. Both your Apple device and your Roku must be connected to the same local Wi-Fi network. Bluetooth is not used for AirPlay streaming.

Why does AirPlay keep buffering on my Roku?

Buffering during AirPlay usually indicates insufficient Wi-Fi bandwidth or signal strength. Move both devices closer to the router, reduce the number of devices using the network simultaneously, and consider switching from a 2.4 GHz to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for faster speeds.

Can I AirPlay to Roku without Wi-Fi?

No. There is no peer-to-peer AirPlay mode for Roku like there is for Apple TV. Both devices must be on an active Wi-Fi network. Without internet access, AirPlay discovery will not function.
